CILS CERTIFICATION

The University for Foreigners of Siena releases the CILS - Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language. CILS is a degree which certifies the level of linguistic and communicative competence in Italian as a second language (L2). (The CILS is recognized as an official title of linguistic competence according to Law 17 February 1992, no 204 and in paragraph 3 of art. 10 of the Statute of the University). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, based on a framework agreement, acknowledges the Italian Cultural Institutes abroad as official venues of the CILS exams. CILS is composed of six levels, designed and produced in conjunction with the information contained in the Common European Framework of Reference of the Council of Europe.
CILS has been designed and implemented within the CILS Center, a Center for Research and Services which has an autonomous nature within the University for Foreigners of Siena, and is independent from the centers which provide services in language training. The Center has developed CILS research, both theoretical and methodological models of reference for the description and articulation proficiency, both choices for its monitoring, evaluation and certification.
The Center is a member of CILS dell'EALTA (European Language Testing Association), an association founded with funding from the European Community, which brings together those involved in language testing and assessment in Europe.
The Center CILS has treated the Italian translation of EALTA Guidelines for Good Practice in Language Testing and evaluation.
